Something truly different for your kids party

Something different!

Loads of mums will find that there are a massive number of children’s entertainers to sift through before they find anyone that’s half decent. Or you may have already organised a number of children’s parties over the years, had lots of different children’s entertainers (some good, some bad) and by now you feel like you’ve seen the same routine over and over again. With so many childrens entertainers, offering the same thing, you may feel like there’s nothing else out there. Well there is. There are heaps of great alternatives to your average children magician or kids entertainer.

Activity party

The title sounds vague and different companies will do different things but an activity party should be fun and energetic. Things you can expect to have are: parachute games, bubble shows (blowing really big bubbles), bubble tower (where kids stand inside a bubble tower – yes it is as fun as it sounds – see photo below) party games, music and dancing balloon modelling and prizes for the kids. Check out our activity party run by us at Froggle Parties. We offer children’s entertainers in Surrey, London and all the home counties. We like to think we really know our stuff and have appeared on Children’s BBC a number of times. We do normal children’s entertainers parties and kids magicians but have a number of other different party choices too. Like dance parties where kids learn their very own dance routine. Drama parties where kids are put inside a story that’s themed to your choice e.g. jungle, fairies, superheroes, chocolate factory, etc… There’s a bubble party where kids get to blow massive bubbles and do cool experiments with bubbles. We do discos or film parties, where your child and their friends get to make your own film where you child is the star, plus balloon workshop parties. There’s heaps of choices to look at that are great alternatives to normal children’s entertainers.

Bubble Tower for Activity Parties

Science Parties

These are becoming more and more popular but they tend to be largely for older kids. The upside is it’s very different from most parties. The down side is that kids can sometimes find it a bit too ‘educational’ for a party environment. We found this site that seems to be very good for science parties.

Bubbles shows with bubbleologists

Another idea using bubbles in parties. You can have serious fun with bubbles. Check this site out for kids bubble parties. The guy who runs this company featured on Blue Peter showing his impressive bubbles skills and he teaches kids how to do it in his children’s parties.

Theatre Parties – A show in your own living room

Another alternative to children’s entertainers is a children’s theatre show in your own home or in a hall. We’ve found these entertainers called David and Katie.  They are children’s entertainers in Surrey but they do cover London as well. They offer a double act comedy show for the kids to watch. I have seen this in action and it is very amusing.  The disadvantage is it does rely on kids sitting still for a long time. When I watched them they had no problem with keep the children’s attention though.

Cooking Parties

A great way for the kids to interact with each other and spend quality time with one another. Plus it’s creative and fun. Cooking parties are becoming more and more popular as parents look for alternatives to children’s entertainers. Pizza Express offer great kids parties at some of their venues too, where the children get to make pizza.
Parents needn’t be stuck with the same old childrens entertainers when there are loads of alternative parties to choose from. That said, kids do tend to like repetition and familiar activities so do make sure when you look for a change that it’s your kid that wants the change and not just you as the parent that wants it. It can go very wrong when you try to do something very different without asking the kids and then you realise they wanted a childrens entertainer all along – you can’t win!!!

Fun birthday cake candles for childrens parties

Colour flamed candles for childrens parties

Colour flamed candles for childrens parties

Why settle for normal candles on a cake when there’s so many other fun options to choose from. We look for any opportunity we can find to jazz up childrens parties and add on all those magical touches. We’ve given a lot of advice on childrens party entertainers lately so we thought we’d have a look at some other fun party ideas.

We’ve come across a great kids party idea to make your birthday cake even more fun. – Coloured flame candles. There are a number of companies that sell them but we’ve suggested one in the link for you. We couldn’t see a price on the website but they’re being sold on amazon for just over £2 a pack.

Loads of other different candles for birthday cakes

1) Singing Candles – These actually play the happy birthday music for you (there’s a musical box underneath the individual candle)

2) Magic candles where the flames relight after you blow them out (an old favourite). We’ve found a great place to source these (see link below)

3) Lettered candles to write a special message on the cake

4) Themed candles like pirate candles or football shape candles to go with the theme of your choice. You can get any shaped candles for any kids party theme if you look around.

5) Or why not get some funky sparklers to add to the fun. These come in all sorts of great shapes and sizes. You could spell out your child’s name if you wanted.

Letter Sparklers

6) Candle Fountains – These are great and create a real wow effect! It’s like having a mini firwork on your cake!

7) Our party favourite for chidlrens party cake candles was the all singing all dancing musical candle. It’s like a candle fountain, singing candle and a sparkler all in one!

Musical Candle

Take a look at this link and you’ll see a video on a musical candle to see what we mean.

You’d be amazed by how much choice there is out there just for candles for childrens parties.

We found a great place to source pretty much all of these types of candles. They have a whole range plus other party supplies.

Birthday Cakes

Whilst you’re in a colourful mood you might like to take a look at this blog we found for a rainbow cake.  It’s a great colourful cake and the candles would compliment it very nicely.

How long should my children’s party be?

How long should my kid's birthday party be?

Children's Parties

Usually children’s birthday parties are 2 hours long.

Usually 20 – 30 minutes of this is taken up by a break for the children to have party food and drinks and then the birthday cake.

The rest of the time should be filled with entertainment for the kids. You can either get a children’s entertainer or do the entertainment yourself with party games, etc…

If you’re getting a children’s entertainer then you don’t have to have the kid’s entertainer there for the whole 2 hours but if you don’t, you should aim to have something else for the kids to do when the entertainer has gone.

Some suggestions of popular party formats/ timings are below:

Option 1: Have the entertainer for the whole 2 hours:

With 45 mins entertainment, 30 min break (during which time the entertainer would entertain the kids around the table or make balloons for them) and then another 45 minutes of entertainment.

Option 2: Have the entertainer stay for just 1 hour.
1 hr entertainment, then 30 mins of food, then you play some games with the kids like pass the parcel and other fun party games.

Option 3: An hour and a half  – Say you have a party from 2-4. You could have the kids arrive at 2 pm, get the childrens entertainer to start the show for 2:15 pm and then entertain the kids for an hour. That obviously takes you up to 3:15 pm. After an hour the children will need a break for food and drink so you could have the entertainer stay while they eat for half an hour and do balloon modelling or entertain the kids whilst their eating round the tables. If the break for food last 30 minutes, then that takes you till 3:45 pm, leaving you with 15mins for the kids to occupy themselves before the mums and dads come to pick them up from the party.

Option 3: A third option: For a 2 hour party is to have a 15 minute period where the kids occupy themselves for a bit whilst everyone else is arriving and waiting for the party to start. Then you start the entertainment and have it run for an hour (either with your own kids part games or the kid’s entertainer). Then you can have a 30 min break for food and drink, which leaves you with 15 minutes where the kids can occupy themselves before the parents come to pick them up. E.g. a party from 3- 5 p.m. would go like this:

3 – 3:15 p.m. – Kids arrive.

3:15 – 4:15 p.m. – Games start or kid’s entertainer does a show.

4:15- 4:45 kids have tea

4;45 – 5:00 – kids get picked up by parents

The advantage to this format is obviously you save on the cost of having a children’s entertainer for just 1 hour or you don’t have to think of as many games if you’re doing it yourself.

The disadvantage is that kids don’t always take 30 minutes for food and if they finish earlier e.g. 4:30, you could have a large bunch of kids running around, full of E numbers and sugar, with nothing to do for half an hour. If that happens you’ll need to make sure you have games for them to do before the parents come to pick them up so do plan for this.

What time of day should I have my children’s party?

There really isn’t any particular ideal time to have a kids party other than what you know will suit you and the other parents.

If its on a weekend the popular time slots are 11am – 1pm or 3-5 pm. But really any time works well. You should aim not to have your party start too early though so 10am is probably the earliest we’d suggest, and then aim not to finish any later than 5:30pm as parents want to be able to get their kids back home in time for tea before it gets too late. They may also have plans in the evening so do bear this in mind.

Weekday parties for kids are becoming more and more popular now too and it leaves you free to have the weekend to do what you want. So this might also be something to consider. It’s always a good idea to have the party about half an hour after school finishes so parents can get their kids there in good time but not have too much time to kill that they end up going home and then taking their kids to the party later.

An advantage of weekday parties is you can probably negotiate a better rate with children’s entertainers as there’s less demand. If you’re lookin gfor a children’s entertainer then take a look at this link for a rage of different children’s parties that are on offer.

It really is exactly as it sounds. Banana ice cream made form one ingredient! – Yup you guessed it – Bananas.

Once frozen, put the banana pieces into the processor until it has started to look like broken up polystyrene.

Then put all of the banana into a bowl and from there scoop out individual scoops with an ice cream scoop.

Then decorate to make it more fun and colourful. Kids will love this for their parties!

Should I get a children’s entertainer for my children’s birthday party?

Kids want to be entertained on their birthday so you definitely need something to occupy them and make it really fun. This doesn’t mean you need a children’s entertainer but if you opt not to have one you should make sure you have something entertaining to do for the kids yourself. If you are interested in looking for children’s entertainers then try this link for options.

Loads of parents have taken to organise their child’s party themselves and do the party games and activities. If it’s well organised it can work very well and the kids can have a great time. But it can be very stressful and if you’re like many parents out there who find the task of occupying 30 kids, a daunting one, you might want to leave it to a professional whilst you sit back and relax.

We’ve heard loads of parents who have organised the party themselves instead of getting a children’s entertainer and saying how they’d never do it again due to the stress. Some have worked well. Others not so well.

At the end of the day you might thrive on the challenge of organising your little ones party and being the children’s entertainer for the day. But if you’d rather relax a bit more and take photos then maybe get someone who does it for a living.

Should I have a Clown for my Kid’s Birthday Party?

Kids clowns are a great idea for children’s birthday parties. They’re very popular with kids from ages 4-10. We do loads of them and usually you should expect a children’s clown to offer activities like magic, puppet shows, balloon modelling, juggling, bubbles and loads of general clown silliness to get the kids laughing. Plus prizes for all the kids. Check out this link to kids clowns for more info.

Generally we suggest that party clowns are suitable for children from the age of 4 and up. Any younger than this and you usually findthat they get scared.

We always say children’s clowns are best if your child has specifically asked for a clown at their party. If you’re not sure about having a kids clown because your children might get scared, then it’s possibly best to go for a children’s clown that doesn’t have the make up, red nose or funny hair. The entertainer could still do the same show  but just not have any facial stuff as this is what tends to make clowns scary for them.  Young kids still love the clown costume and fun activities that clowns do. Most children’s entertainment companies will be able to accommodate this for you.
